Job Shadows and Student Observations
Essentia Health is strategically committed to the education of our future healthcare workforce. Essentia Health has focused its resources on providing clinical placements for students as required by their accredited academic programs, however we are not able to accommodate requests for informational “job shadows”. We encourage students interested in healthcare careers to:
- Volunteer at Essentia or another healthcare organization
- Find employment experiences in a healthcare organization
- Learn more about careers at essentiahealth.org/explore, or other online career exploration resources.
I am applying to a graduate PT/OT program in an Essentia Health community and need observation hours.
Through a special program, Essentia accommodates PT/OT observations for our local graduate programs through the Essentia Volunteer office. Go to essentiahealth.org/explore and click on the “Become a Volunteer” button. You will find an application to fill out and send in. Please follow the procedure there.
My school says I have to shadow in order to get into their program. What can I do?
Essentia has focused its resources on supporting required clinical placements for students enrolled in accredited academic programs. Essentia does not have the capacity to offer job shadow opportunities. Usually schools recommend shadowing, but do not require it. Schools want to see that you have been involved with patient care, that you understand health care, and that you are committed to the field. Volunteering is a great way to do all of this. Our academic programs are becoming more aware that hospitals can no longer offer shadows and permit alternate ways to demonstrate your readiness.
I am a teacher and would like to bring my class to tour Essentia to learn about careers. Can we come?
Essentia no longer offers tours of patient care or clinical support areas to protect privacy and minimize risk of distraction and infection. We suggest that you have your students explore the resources for health care careers on the web. Many are listed at: essentiahealth.org/explore.
